Council listens on erosion problem By Sarla Donovan

CLEAN SWEEP: New Brighton Catholic School deputy principal Nick Gray (left) with sister Adie, brother Rod and mother Sharon on TV3’s game show Family Feud. Above: Pupils with the new Suzuki Swift which the Grays won.

Family Feud success inspires maths learning By Sarla Donovan NEW BRIGHTON Catholic School teacher Nick Gray used his recent success on the TV3 show Family Feud to inspire his children’s statistics learning last week. The class broke into ‘family’ groups and played each other in a mock competition. They then posed their own questions for investigation and discussed

ways to collect and display their data. Once the children have their information they will run their own games with other classrooms. As a surprise, Mr Gray brought in his brand new Suzuki Swift to share with the children. He won the car on the popular game show two weeks ago, along with $10,000.

It was a “hilarious and wonderfully entertaining” experience, prompted when his sister Adie spotted an audition call and decided to enter the whole family. “It was amazing. It was a team of my mum, brother, sister and me. We were on for five nights, it was all very nice. We got flown up to Auckland twice and put up in hotels and it was cool

to hang out as a family.” Mr Gray said they had a strategy. “We decided to relax and just always play, try not to pass and get rid of the easy answers so the other team only gets the hard ones.” Mum Sharon would get to keep the car, while the $10,000 would be split four ways. Mr Gray plans to spend his share on a family holiday.

SOUTHSHORE residents are “stoked” at news the city council is finally acting on concerns over estuary edge erosion. In May, Pegasus Post reported on residents’ increasing frustration that nothing had been done to protect vulnerable properties, six years on from the earthquakes. Now, it seems the city council is starting to listen. Last week it signalled its intention to ask Regenerate Christchurch to fasttrack the time frame for dealing with redzoned land in Southshore. City council chief executive Karleen Edwards is going to look at a plan by coastal engineering firm OCEL Consultants for estuary edge protection at Southshore, and report back to the city council on its feasibility. The plan, commissioned probono by the Southshore Residents Association last year, proposes constructing a berm to protect the area from inundation on the estuary side, for an estimated $7.5 million. It was good news for SRA chairman Bill Simpson (above). • Turn to page 4

PEOPLE POWER – and coverage in the Pegasus Post – seems to be moving the city council in the right direction over coastal erosion. We report on page 1 today the council seems to be taking the public’s concerns seriously – not that I’m suggesting it hasn’t previously. Yeah right! Six years on from the quakes zilch has been done to stop the erosion along the estuary side of Southshore and now there’s concern about encroachment at South Brighton Domain. Local residents’ association chairman Bill Simpson says he is “very pleased” the city council is finally acting. But local city councillor David East is worried it will be bogged down in consultation and talk. He wants action now (see page 4), and after waiting since the 2011 earthquake he’s got a point. – Barry Clarke

Shop fronts: Back to the future

By Sarla Donovan NEW BRIGHTON has a new shop . . . front. A former tattoo parlour in New Brighton Mall has had its front window transformed with scenes of a bustling bicycle shop inside. It’s the first of half a dozen shops in the mall which will get the artistic makeovers over the coming weeks. The photographic transfer is taken from an Auckland bicycle shop owned by a friend of project organiser Daniel Manchester. After shifting to New Brighton from Auckland to help with the Christchurch rebuild, Mr Manchester was inspired to inject new life into the suburb by covering derelict shop fronts with scenes harking back to its heyday. He’s hoping the project will brighten the mall and spark conversations. “It might encourage some into (seeing the area) with fresh eyes.” He said after the transfer went up on Friday, he’d had another building owner contact him wanting their building to get the treatment. Ara Institute Art and Design students have created the trans-

The scheme, dubbed Brighter New Brighton was inspired by Bushmill in Northern Ireland, a recession-hit town which gave its empty shops a creative makeover. Paintings of a barber shop, bakery and greengrocer covered empty windows and doors in a move that helped to attract tourists and rejuvenate the

community. Mr Manchester said the community reaction had been positive and he was looking at using different mediums for some of the shop windows, including props, displays and 3D projections. A local group had also contacted him about creating a knitted bakery with cakes and pastries, a cashier and other items.

The next shop to get the treatment would be the former Dowsons building in Brighton Mall. And for anyone wanting an actual bicycle repairer? Mr Manchester says he’ll put a sign in the shopwindow, for a New Brighton man called David who fixes bicycles from his home and has been “keeping the world spinning since 1976.”

In Brief POOL DEMOLITION Demolition of the former Central New Brighton School pool will happen “as soon as possible.” The Ministry of Education say the site is currently in the disposal process after the SURF Community Trust, which planned to obtain a license to use the swimming pool, decided not to proceed with their application. PARK DEVELOPMENT Wainoni Park will have a new, full-sized basketball court by January after the CoastalBurwood Community Board gave the go-ahead last week. The court will shift from its current site to the car park next to the Aranui-Wainoni Community Centre. A new stormwater retention basin will also be built in the northeastern corner of Wainoni Park. Work will begin in September. FUNDING FOR KINDERGARTEN South Brighton Kidsfirst Kindergarten has been given $3500 from the CoastalBurwood Community Board’s discretionary fund. The money will go towards new turf for the grassed play area and new blinds for the art and music rooms.

Your Local Views Estuary action needed now

News

Patient residents in Southshore and South Brighton have waited long enough for action on estuary protection, writes Coastalward city councillor David East.

untenable and remedial action needs to be accelerated. In my view the estuary edge needs to be split into three quite distinct areas for restoration. Trying to deal with them as one will involve some areas being delayed by complexities in the others. Southshore is obviously an area in its own right that is bound up in residential red zoning issues. The local community have commissioned what I believe is a very good engineering report to address the issues in this area. In my mind view, Regenerate Christchurch and Land Information New Zealand need to carry out an assessment of the suitability of this report, amend where and if necessary and propose its implementation. There is no point in reinventing the wheel; much if not all the work required has been done. The second area is that part of

Fashion RESIDENTS in the Coastal ward are quite rightly expressing their frustration around the restoration of the eastern edge of the estuary following the earthquakes. Considerable erosion has occurred in a number of areas and six years on repairs have not yet been effected. Residents gaze across the estuary and admire the work completed on the other side and lament the lack of progress on our side. Phrases like “the chosen ones” in reference to those living on the other side prevail but unfortunately complexities in the status of parts of the estuary edge in South New Brighton and Southshore have complicated progress. Regardless of those complexities, a six year delay is

the estuary edge which extends from the boardwalk to the jetty and is perhaps the area that is eroding the most at the moment. It has no residential red zone complications and is under the jurisdiction of the city council. This is the area where we can get quick wins and an immediate repair programme is capable of being implemented in a very short space of time. The third area extends from the jetty to Bridge St and then from Bridge St through to a point upstream of Kibblewhite St. There are many complexities: Higher groundwater levels, land lowered post earthquakes and issues around sea/salt water intrusion. A great deal of investigatory work is under way and preliminary proposals are being investigated. The solutions are quite complex and will require a great deal of regeneration planning. A regeneration plan is proposed and is probably the optimal solution for this area. Residents have been exceedingly patient, however, remedial action is required now, not an endless talkfest of possible solutions

ACTION: Rockinghorse Rd residents Nick and Liz Yuki are “stoked” the city council is going to try and fast-track a solution to erosion problems in Southshore.

Council listens on erosion problem • From page 1 “It puts it before the city council. We couldn’t ask for more than that, I’m very pleased. A couple of people made verbal submissions (on the issue) as part of the Annual Plan process and that might have tipped the balance.” Rockinghorse Rd resident Nick Yuki and his wife Liz were very stoked to hear this news. Our hope and patience has paid off and we now excitedly await some real action from Regenerate

Christchurch to save our shore.” Hundreds of submissions on the city council’s Annual Plan came from residents in the coastal east, many concerned over the lack of estuary edge protection. Privately built seawalls destroyed during the clearance of red zone properties in Southshore left the area open to erosion and flooding from storms and high tide. Dr Edwards will present a report on her findings to the city council in August.

News Whale pool is on the move By Sarla Donovan CONCEPT DESIGNS for New Brighton’s $8 million beachside playground show the iconic whale is on the move. The whale will shift further south from its current location, and have a water jet added in. It’ll be joined by a pelican, a jellyfish, a sea serpent and an alien rainforest in the water-play and splash pad zone. The wet play area will use warm water during the colder months and can be drained and used without water. There’s also a dry play area with a flying fox, climbing frames, slides and trampolines and next to the library, a toddlers zone. Pupils from South New Brighton, Rawhiti and New Brighton Catholic School have helped develop the concept design, along with previous feedback gathered by Development Christchurch Ltd, which is overseeing the project. The playground will be sited on what is currently a grassed park adjacent to the north side of the library. Once construction starts, the old playground and paddling pool will be closed to allow its replacement to be built. The $11

Temporary move for school By Bridget Rutherford LINWOOD College will temporarily shift to the site of Avonside Girls’ High School while its whole school is rebuilt. Principal Richard Edmundson has announced the school would relocate to the Avonside Drive school in term 2, 2019, for the duration of its rebuild and redevelopment. Avonside Girls’ Richard will be moving Edmundson to its new school at QE II in early 2019, alongside Shirley Boys’ High School. Once it has moved, Linwood would move onto the site, which is largely made up of relocatable classrooms following damage in the February 22, 2011 earthquake. Mr Edmundson said they were very happy, as it would take a year off the construction time. It also meant there would be no disruption to the students’ learning during the build, he said. The move was expected to save $1 million, as there was no need for re-relocatable classrooms.

Disabled sculptor to go on dream trip Fashion A LONG-HELD dream is about to come true for the woman behind the South Brighton Sculpture Park. Bon Suter has developed a special bond with friend and fellow artist Donald Gibson over the past 25 years. Mr Gibson is blind, deaf and unable to talk but under Ms Suter’s patient tutelage he has developed into a talented sculptor. The pair have worked together often and slowly built up the South Brighton Sculpture Park but soon they’re going to swap the sand dunes of South Brighton for the shores of Hawaii. Ms Suter has an artist friend there who works with people with disabilities and has always promised to take Mr Gibson there to visit. “I’ve decided it’s time I made good on that promise,’’ said Ms Suter. “Donald is over the moon. ADVERTORIAL

THE RICCARTON MARKET IS NOT CLOSING! During winter, as expected, the number of stall holders and the number of people coming to the market reduces but we still get in excess of 4,000 people coming every week. One of the strong points about the Riccarton Market is that both entry and parking is free to the public”.

Don’t believe everything that you hear! Despite numerous rumours the popular Riccarton Market is not closing. “It is easy to understand the confusion” says Craig Murphy, President of the Rotary Club of Riccarton. (The Riccarton Market is owned by the Riccarton Rotary Charitable Trust and managed by the Rotary Club of Riccarton). “With much publicity being given to the proposed new housing subdivision on some of the land currently occupied by the Riccarton Racing Club people have missed the point that not all of the land is going to be utilised. Over the next few years land will be progressively developed into residential sections along Yaldhurst Road and Steadman Road and then into other parts of the property. It does not however intrude into that portion of the land currently occupied by the Riccarton market”. Plans released by the developers, Ngai Tahu Properties, show the proposed subdivision being done over 6 stages which when completed will provide approximately 600 new residential sections. “In preparation for the development the Riccarton Market has reduced its footprint and condensed the number of stalls available. The Racing Club has offered other land closer to the entrance in exchange for land surrendered by the market. These new areas will be incorporated into the market over time” advises Ross Binning, Chair of Riccarton Rotary’s Market Committee. “By reducing the footprint now we have been able to provide additional parking for our customers making coming to the Riccarton Market even easier. Over the summer months we have been getting crowds in excess of 10,000 people every Sunday.

HUNDREDS OF STALLS

The Riccarton Market has been in operation for 29 years. Over that time it has moved location several times. From its origins as a ‘car boot sale’ located at the Riccarton Mall carpark, it moved to The Bush Inn, then outgrew sites at Riccarton High School and then at the University, relocating to the racecourse site more than 15 year ago. It has become an institution in Christchurch – described by the Christchurch City Council as ‘an icon’ for locals and tourists alike. It is the largest charity market in New Zealand and with room for over 300 stalls it is arguably the largest weekly market in the country. During this period Riccarton Rotary has donated more than $3 million to local charities and individuals as well as supporting other national and international projects especially at times of emergency. “It is disappointing that people still talk about the Riccarton Market closing” says Craig Murphy. “In many cases those people are directly associated with competitive markets around the city so they no doubt see it to their advantage by creating uncertainty about the future of the Riccarton Market. Be assured the Riccarton Market is here to stay. We have a secure long term arrangement over the Riccarton Park site and apart from some relatively minor redesign of the footprint over the next few years there is nothing that will change as far as our many loyal customers are concerned. They will be able to continue to come for their vegetables, meats, other food items, hardware, tools, furniture, plants, artworks, jewellery, cat and dog needs, clothing as well as to be entertained by the live music and stay and have their lunch from one of the numerous ethnic and specialised food and refreshment stalls located around the central ‘commons’. By Sarla Donovan CHILDREN FROM Queenspark School were preparing a plot and planting out vegetables at the New Brighton Community Gardens recently. They were also shown how to make a frame for their peas to grow on. The budding gardeners were on their second visit as part of Eastern Community Sport and Recreation’s 10 week sports programme for year 5-8 children, which runs on Fridays at Rawhiti Domain. Children from schools around the eastern suburbs participate and some have been elected to do gardening. They work in the community garden, by the gates of Rawhiti Domain. Teacher Jackie Stafford has 12 pupils doing this activity with her. They have so far designed and painted a sign for their plot, prepared and planted their garden, eaten feijoas that had fallen to the ground and carrots that had just been dug up and cooked potato puffs. Community garden volunteers run the programme and Ms Stafford supports the children in the ‘Sunflower’ team, which includes the Queenspark pupils. She said the programme was a “fantastic initiative.”

BROUGHT TO YOU BY... Slow-cooked beef cheek

Mu shu pork (Serves 4 )

(Serves 4 )

Ingredients

Beef cheeks naturally contain a lot of collagen which, when cooked long and slow, converts into a luscious rich texture. The cheeks will be extra tender and flavoursome if prepared a day in advance and will taste even better. Ingredients 6 cups Beef stock 3 Tbsp Rice bran oil ½ cup Carrot, diced ½ cup Onion, diced ½ cup Celery, diced 3 Garlic cloves, peeled and sliced 1 Tbsp Tomato paste 2 cups Red wine 1 Bay leaf 4 sprigs Fresh thyme 1 sprig Fresh rosemary, small 1.2 kgs Beef cheeks, 1 cheek per serve 1 tsp Salt Directions Heat the oven to 140 deg C. Bring the beef stock to the boil. Heat the oil and fry the

vegetables, garlic and tomato paste for 10 minutes to lightly caramelise. Turn the heat up to high, add the red wine and reduce by half. Season the beef cheeks with salt and pepper then place them in an ovenproof casserole (or use a slow cooker). Add in the reduced wine and vegetables. Add the herbs and cover with beef stock. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook in the oven for 3 hours. To make the glazing sauce,

strain off half the cooking juices into a saucepan, bring this to the boil and reduce until thick and syrupy. To serve, gently reheat the cheeks in the remaining cooking juices. When hot, carefully lift them out and place them into the glazing sauce. Smother with sauce and serve with creamy potato mash and a warm salad of greens (I have steamed brussels sprout leaves, peas, and broad beans, then tossed them with a little olive oil and sea salt flakes).

PEGASUS POST

Parents of Year 6 students are encouraged to take a good look at their child’s full primary school when choosing schooling for 2018. Why change schools when you don’t need to? Full Primary schools are tried and tested and have developed in innovative and cost effective ways since their inception in 1877. They are as important to the provision of education in 2018 as they were in 1877.

What makes them successful? • They have evolved over time and have responded to the different demographic changes since 1877. • They are located in neighbourhoods; they cater for families and respond to community needs. • They are staffed by highly trained teachers who know curriculum levels from Level 1 – 5 who have had the same teacher training as teachers in other Year 7 and 8 school types. • Teachers in the student’s current full primary school know about individual students learning progress and learning style from Year 1 – 8.

What does the research tell us about the learning needs of Year 7 and 8 students? • Curriculum that is relevant, challenging, integrative, and exploratory • Multiple learning and teaching approaches • Assessment and evaluation programmes that promote quality learning • Organisational structures that support meaningful relationships and learning

• Developing the whole child, flexibility, nurture, innovation and child centred learning sum up full primary schools.

• Educators who value working with the age group

• Year 7 and 8 students are the leaders and role models along with the adults in a full primary school with opportunities to nurture Year 1 – 6 students.

• School-wide efforts and policies that foster health, wellness, and safety

• School organisation in a full primary school fits the needs of students not the timetable. • All Year 7 and 8 students are included in leadership opportunities, sporting opportunities, school community job opportunities, buddy responsibilities and role model expectations. They are seen by others in the school as the leaders and younger students look up to them. • These opportunities and strategies to build leadership, key competencies and resilience are available to all Year 7 and 8 students in a full primary.

• Courageous, collaborative leadership

• Multifaceted guidance and support services • School-initiated family and community partnerships

Looking at the above list it becomes clear that it isn’t school type or school buildings that make the difference for Year 7 and 8 students. It is instead the innovative approach to learning and the attitude of professionals toward this group of students. This can happen in any school setting as long as the leadership, teachers and non-teaching staff are committed to the social and emotional development of this group of learners. Full Primary Schools are providers of Year 7 and 8 education in every way that other types of schools are.

And also

• From the broader ‘teaching and learning literature’, there is strong evidence that the quality of teaching which students receive at all levels and stages of schooling is of major importance in influencing achievement outcomes for students. • While productive and positive student-teacher relationships are identified as an important characteristic of highly performing schools catering for middle years’ students, it needs to be acknowledged that good teachers and school leaders at all levels of schooling is what works. • It is therefore debateable whether at least some aspects of the philosophy and enactment of middle schooling is any different from ‘good’ teaching and effective schooling generally in all school types.

The literature is clear in advocating ‘middle schooling approaches focusing on quality teaching and enhanced learning’ rather than on school type. Therefore it is what happens in the classroom to support learning and what happens across the school to cater for the specific developmental, cognitive, physical, emotional and social needs of Year 7 and 8 that makes the difference. Not school type. The research on middle schooling and its implications to provide quality education to Year 7 and 8 students is as applicable to full primary school as it is for other schooling types.

SOUTHERN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Academic or practical? We have a course for you! Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) offers programmes from Certificate to Masters level, with course intakes throughout the year. The Christchurch campus has programmes covered by the Zero Fees Scheme, which means you are not charged tuition fees, only paying for any direct material costs involved. The New Zealand Certificate in Project Management is open for enrolments and students can begin studying at the end of June or in the September intake. Teaching the core skills and techniques of project management, this course will allow you to contribute to the management of various projects and work

with others in a project team. Offered via blended delivery, you get the best of both worlds, with fortnightly workshops and online study combining to create a flexible and comprehensive programme. If you’re looking to get a trade under your belt, the Certificate in Construction is a great option as the building industry is in need of those with construction qualifications. Beginning in August, this course can allow you to fast track your way through an apprenticeship. Covering carpentry theory, elementary construction skills, health and safety, drawing and practical construction,

you will attend classes three days per week, with the other two days occupied by practical work experience. Students have the opportunity to participate in house building coupled with the completion of theory units, which will ideally then lead into an apprenticeship. SECONDARY SCHOOL SELECTION

A bright future at Shirley and Avonside With a brand new state-of-the-art campus on their horizon and a host of new opportunities to offer students, it is a great time to enrol at Shirley Boys’ High School and Avonside Girls’ High School. The two schools will relocate to their new site, at QEII Park, in time for Term 2 of 2019, so students who enrol for next year will be at the new schools in their second year of high school. Being able to start from scratch has enabled the architects to create the ‘ultimate campus’. It features a large Performing Arts Centre (with a 750-seat and a 100-seat theatre), three full-sized gyms (complete with climbing wall), a cultural space and four sportsfields. Each school will also have a long list of its own specialist learning facilities, including: • Electronics Lab • Recording Studios • Editing Suites • 2D and 3D Printing Room • 6 Science Labs • An Indoor Fitness Centre Avonside Girls’ principal Sue Hume says the students will spend most of their day in a single sex environment. “That’s important to us. The research clearly shows that single sex education benefits both girls and boys...boys do better academically and girls participate more when they have space to learn and focus away from the opposite gender,” says Sue Hume. Shirley Boys’ High School headmaster

Avonside Girls’ principal Sue Hume and Shirley Boys’ High School headmaster John Laurenson

John Laurenson says being co-located will enable both schools to offer their students more. “We’ll be able to work together to deliver more specialist subjects so we can widen our curriculum and we will be able to co-operate on things like school productions. Obviously there will be lots of social and educational advantages to this.” A large bus network is being created to help make travelling to and from the campus easy, and the schools are also working with local authorities to create safe cycling and walking routes to the site. While the new zone hasn’t been finalised yet, the schools’ intake for next year will be based on their current zones. That is good news for any families considering out-of-zone enrolments. Much of the school’s existing zones now sit in the residential red zone so there is plenty of space.

There are two demonstrations. This Saturday 1st July from 2pm to 3pm at Thai Chefs Restaurant, 1 Riccarton Rd and on Sunday 2nd July from 10am to 1pm at the Riccarton Market, 165 Racecourse Rd. Ingredients will be available to purchase at the Sunday market - a great chance to stock your pantry with genuine flavours of Thailand.
